How to use the Cubic Feet to Square Feet Converter

  1. Enter the actual layer thickness or space height. It is converted to feet before the area or volume calculation.
  2. Choose volume-to-area or area-to-volume. Enter the known amount and the uniform height or depth.
  3. Select Calculate. Review the result and its working; if you change an input, calculate again before copying or sharing.

Cubic Feet to Square Feet formula

At uniform depth, volume equals area times depth. Divide by depth to find area, or multiply by depth to find volume.

THE FORMULA Area (ft²) = volume (ft³) ÷ depth (ft); volume = area × depth

What the terms mean

Volume (ft³) or area (ft²)
A numeric input used by the displayed calculation.
Uniform height / depth
A measured length in the selected unit; it is converted to feet before volume is calculated.

Cubic Feet to Square Feet worked examples

Find area from volume and depth

A uniform layer occupies 24 ft³ and is 2 ft deep. Find the covered area.

  1. Area = cubic feet ÷ depth in feet
  2. Depth = 2 ft

Answer: 12 ft².

Find volume for a three-inch layer

Cover 100 ft² at a uniform 3 in depth. Select square feet to cubic feet.

  1. Volume = square feet × depth in feet
  2. Depth = 0.25 ft

Answer: 25 ft³.

Cubic Feet to Square Feet Converter FAQs

Why must I enter depth?

The same volume can cover a large shallow area or a smaller deep area. Area equals volume divided by depth.

Can I enter depth in inches?

Yes. Choose inches next to the depth input; twelve inches equals one foot.

Measurement guide for Cubic Feet to Square Feet

Volume becomes area only after you supply a uniform height or depth. Convert a depth measured in inches to feet, or select inches in the form.

Assumptions and limits

Volume and area are different physical quantities. There is no fixed cubic-feet-to-square-feet factor without a depth.

Check your result

Multiply the area by the uniform depth in feet to recover volume. A different assumed depth gives a different area.
