How to use this calculator

  1. Divide the leading part of the dividend by the divisor.
  2. Multiply, subtract and bring down the next digit.
  3. Repeat until the digits are exhausted or the required precision is reached.

A little understanding goes a long way.

Long division turns a large division into a sequence of smaller operations. For nonnegative integer inputs, the remainder is at least zero and less than the divisor.

THE FORMULA Dividend = divisor × quotient + remainder

A worked example

157 ÷ 12 = 13 remainder 1 because 12 × 13 + 1 = 157. As a decimal, the quotient is 13.08333…

A few common questions

Can the divisor be zero?

No. Division by zero is undefined.

Does a remainder mean the division is wrong?

No. It represents the amount left after taking all complete groups of the divisor.
