How to use the Natural Gas Cubic Feet to kWh Calculator

  1. Enter the provider’s heating value in BTU per cubic foot. The tool converts International Table BTU to kilowatt-hours.
  2. Choose gas-volume-to-energy or the reverse direction. Enter the known amount and the stated gas heat content.
  3. Select Calculate. Review the result and its working; if you change an input, calculate again before copying or sharing.

Cubic Feet to kWh formula

Fuel energy equals gas volume times heat content. Kilowatt-hour output expresses the same fuel energy in a different energy unit.

THE FORMULA BTU = ft³ × BTU/ft³; kWh = BTU ÷ 3,412.141633

What the terms mean

Gas volume (ft³) or energy (kWh)
A numeric input used by the displayed calculation.
Gas heat content
Illustrative heating value. Use the value and volume conditions from your gas provider.

Cubic Feet to kWh worked examples

Express natural-gas fuel energy in kilowatt-hours

Use 100 ft³ of gas with an illustrative heat content of 1,030 BTU (IT)/ft³. The result expresses fuel energy, not electrical output.

  1. Energy = gas volume × heat content ÷ 3,412.141633

Answer: 30.18632 kWh. Heat content used: 1,030 BTU (IT)/ft³.

Find gas volume for one kilowatt-hour of fuel energy

Use 1 kWh of fuel energy and the stated heat content of 1,030 BTU (IT)/ft³. Select fuel energy to gas volume.

  1. Gas volume = energy ÷ heat content (convert kWh to BTU first)

Answer: 3.312759 ft³. Heat content used: 1,030 BTU (IT)/ft³.

Natural Gas Cubic Feet to kWh Calculator FAQs

Why do I need a heating value?

Gas composition and reference conditions affect the energy in each cubic foot. Volume alone is insufficient.

Is kWh the same as kW?

No. kWh measures energy over time; kW measures power.

Measurement guide for Cubic Feet to kWh

Use the supplier’s gas heat content. Kilowatt-hours here express fuel energy; estimating delivered heat or electricity also requires efficiency.

Assumptions and limits

A kilowatt-hour is energy. This result is the gas fuel’s energy equivalent, not electricity generated or a claim about appliance efficiency.

Use the heating value and reference volume conditions supplied by your gas provider. This measures fuel energy, not delivered heat or electricity.

Check your result

Divide fuel energy by the stated heat content to check gas volume. The estimate does not include appliance losses or electricity-generation efficiency.
