How to use the Moving Cubic Feet Calculator
- Measure each item as it will travel. Add separate rows for different sizes and use quantity for identical packed boxes.
- Add differently sized items as separate rows. Use quantities for matching items and enter a planning allowance.
- Select Calculate. Review the result and its working; if you change an input, calculate again before copying or sharing.
Moving formula
The volume of each item envelope is multiplied by its quantity. The planning allowance increases their combined measured volume.
Required volume = Σ(length × width × height × quantity) × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)
What the terms mean
- Extra volume allowance
- A percentage added to the geometric volume for the planning assumption you choose.
Moving worked examples
Allow extra space around a measured item
An item measures 4 ft × 3 ft × 2 ft. Add a 15% volume allowance for planning space.
- Section 1: L × W × H = 24 ft³ × 1 (add)
- Total × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)
Answer: 27.6 ft³. Measured item volume: 24 ft³; Cubic yards: 1.022222 yd³; Litres: 781.544966 L.
Total boxes and a furniture envelope
Four boxes each measure 2 ft × 1.5 ft × 1 ft. A furniture item has a 6 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft envelope. Add both rows with no allowance.
- Section 1: L × W × H = 3 ft³ × 4 (add)
- Section 2: L × W × H = 54 ft³ × 1 (add)
- Total × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)
Answer: 66 ft³. Measured item volume: 66 ft³; Cubic yards: 2.444444 yd³; Litres: 1,868.911875 L.
Moving Cubic Feet Calculator FAQs
Are preset furniture volumes used?
No. This calculator uses your measured dimensions, avoiding a fixed assumption about furniture sizes.
Does the result guarantee a truck size?
No. It is a volume budget. Check truck dimensions, payload and how items will be arranged.
Measurement guide for Moving
Measure furniture at its widest external points, including handles and legs. Enter differently sized items on separate rows and matching items as quantities.
Assumptions and limits
Furniture envelopes include unused space. Stacking, door clearance and access can increase the space needed beyond the total.
Volume and packing allowance estimate space. Arrangement, access and vehicle shape may require more room.
Check your result
Review measured item volume before the allowance. Actual packing arrangements and access requirements can require more space than the sum of item envelopes.
