How to use the Landscaping / Coverage Cubic Feet Calculator

LengthWidthHeight/ depth
Measure length, width and perpendicular height or fill depth. Use inside dimensions for capacity. Diagram is schematic and not to scale.
  1. Measure the coverage footprint and target fill depth. Choose known area if you already have a square-foot or square-metre measurement.
  2. Choose length and width or a known coverage area. Enter depth, allowance and actual package yield; add supplier density or price only when needed.
  3. Select Calculate. Review the result and its working; if you change an input, calculate again before copying or sharing.

Landscaping / Coverage formula

First calculate the geometric fill volume. Apply the entered percentage allowance to that volume, then divide by product yield and round up to whole bags.

THE FORMULA Base volume = area × depth; order volume = base × (1 + allowance ÷ 100); bags = ceil(order volume ÷ bag yield)

What the terms mean

Length
A measured length in the selected unit; it is converted to feet before volume is calculated.
Width
A measured length in the selected unit; it is converted to feet before volume is calculated.
Coverage area
The measured area to cover, expressed in the selected square unit.
Fill depth
A measured length in the selected unit; it is converted to feet before volume is calculated.
Extra volume allowance
A percentage added to the geometric volume for the planning assumption you choose.
Volume per bag
Use the actual bag label; the starting value is an example.
Bulk density (optional)
Entered in lb/ft³.
Price (optional)
Price per selected bag, volume unit or US short ton; use one currency consistently.

Landscaping / Coverage worked examples

Estimate material for a shallow landscape layer

A 10 ft × 6 ft area needs a 3 in layer. Add 5% extra volume and use 1.5 ft³ packages.

  1. Area 60 ft² × depth 0.25 ft = 15 ft³
  2. Order volume = 15 × (1 + 5 ÷ 100)
  3. Bags = round up (15.75 ÷ 1.5)

Answer: 15.75 ft³. Base volume: 15 ft³; Cubic yards: 0.583333 yd³; Litres: 445.990334 L; Whole bags: 11 bags.

Estimate coverage with an ordering allowance

Cover 200 ft² at a uniform 4 in depth. Add a 10% allowance and use 2 ft³ packages.

  1. Area 200 ft² × depth 0.333333 ft = 66.666667 ft³
  2. Order volume = 66.666667 × (1 + 10 ÷ 100)
  3. Bags = round up (73.333333 ÷ 2)

Answer: 73.333333 ft³. Base volume: 66.666667 ft³; Cubic yards: 2.716049 yd³; Litres: 2,076.56875 L; Whole bags: 37 bags.

Landscaping / Coverage Cubic Feet Calculator FAQs

Can I enter area directly?

Yes. Select known coverage area and choose square feet or square metres.

Does this work for an irregular garden footprint?

Use its measured area and average intended depth. Uneven depth needs separate areas for a better estimate.

Measurement guide for Landscaping / Coverage

Divide uneven coverage into zones with separate representative depths. Enter the purchased material’s package volume rather than a generic bag size.

Assumptions and limits

The layer is assumed uniform. Split different depths into separate calculations and use a product-specific density or bag volume.

Bag yield and bulk density depend on the actual product. Allowance is applied to volume; bags are rounded up.

Check your result

Compare the base volume with area multiplied by depth in feet. The order volume includes your allowance; a bag count is rounded up using the entered product yield.
